Course Overview
This 4-full day course is designed, in line with DCCF Framework to upskill learners to:

(1) provide supervisory and guiding role to staff under their care in using person centred approaches and,

(2) influence change in workplace practices and processes to enrich quality of life of persons living with dementia and their caregivers.

A multi-disciplinary team comprising of medical, nursing and care & counselling, led by a senior occupational therapist will form part of the training team.

Course Objectives

  • Describe different types of dementia, causes and its implications to practice
  • Distinguish between dementia, delirium and depression
  • Discuss multi-dimensional changing needs and management of persons with dementia at different stages
  • Create Dementia Friendly Environments (Social and Physical)
  • Apply non-pharmacological approaches in managing behaviours of concern associated with dementia
  • Plan, design and facilitate person-centred activities to maximise successful engagement
  • Describe use of palliative care in persons with dementia
  • Recognise importance of caring for self and developing positive coping techniques
  • List community services available to provide support and respite to caregivers
  • Identify process involved to support persons with dementia who may be experiencing neglect, harm or abuse

Who Should Attend

This course is open to all community care staff caring for persons with dementia who have completed the DCCF Basic Level (either SLEC or its equivalent) and/or already in the supervisory role seeking further training development, upcoming or current Dementia Practitioners:

  • Support Care Staff (Minimum 3 years experience required)

Ms May Low Mee Kong is a Master Trainer.

May Low has been working with persons living with dementia for more than 20 over years with wide ranging experience from acute to community care. May is passionate about bringing clients under her care live a more meaningful and dignified life.

She graduated with Bachelor of Health Science (Occupational Therapy), Sydney and Masters of Gerontology, Singapore with her thesis focusing on technology and dementia care. She is also an ACTA certified trainer.

She has led SLEC teams in winning awards in Best Dementia Care Programme (Ageing Asia 2019), creation of Dementia Care Teams (AIC Quality Festival 2018 and SHQSA 2019) and creation of Dementia Day Care Centre (Community Care Excellence, 2020). Currently she is actively involved in providing dementia care consultancy in areas of staff training and development, activity programming and designing of dementia-friendly environment in various care settings such as nursing homes and dementia day care centres.

The full course is $784.80 (including prevailing GST). Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singapore Citizens/Permanent Residents and 45% for work pass holders working in eligible community care organisations.
