Course Overview
Every individual is different, so are their care needs. Caregivers who may be new in providing care and support to the elderly person may feel overwhelmed. Join us in this training where caregivers will learn practical skills to deliver essential support to provide unique care needs for the elderly person.
We are offering 4 individual course modules for the Caregivers Training.
Participants do NOT need to attend all 4 modules.
Module 1: Effective Communication with Older Person
Course Synposis:
This course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of th biopsychosocial changes that occur in older individuals and equip them with effective communication skills using the SOLER model. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical applications, and case studies, participants will gain valuable insights into the unique needs and challenges faced by the ageing population.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the biopsychosocial changes affecting the older person
- Apply SOLER communication model for effective communication with older person who has different medical conditions
Module 2: The Physical Health of Older Person & Environment Safety
Course Synposis:
This course is tailored for caregivers seeking comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in the care and mobility management of older individuals. Participants will gain insights into the physical health benefits of exercises, proper positioning for skin integrity, ABC biomechanics principles, fall management techniques, and effective assistance methods for individuals with mobility challenges. Additionally, the course covers the identification and use of various walking aids to enhance the quality of care provided to older individuals.
Course Objectives:
- Recognize and articulate the physical health benefits of exercises.
- Understand the importance of regular repositioning to maintain skin integrity.
- Comprehend the principles of ABC biomechanics to ensure safe and efficient movement.
- Demonstrate the ability to settle an older person who has experienced a fall.
- Demonstrate the ability to stand in the correct position and walk at an appropriate pace when assisting an older person with mobility challenges.
- Recognize and differentiate various walking aids, including quad-sticks, walking frames, and wheelchairs.
Module 3: Holistic Health & Well-Being of Older Person & Caregiver
Course Synposis:
This course provides participants with a comprehensive exploration of holistic health and well-being, emphasising the interconnected nature of physical health, mental well-being, emotional balance, and spiritual health. Grounded in the Biopsychosocial model, participants will gain insights into the various dimensions of health and develop practical techniques for nurturing a holistic approach to well-being.
Course Objectives:
- Understand and articulate the interrelation between physical health, mental well-being, emotional balance, and spiritual health..
- Gain insightful knowledge about mental health issues, such as dementia, depression, and anxiety.
- Recognize the trigger factors that can affect your emotional health.
- Appreciate the holistic perspective of health through the lens of the Biopsychosocial model
- Acquire practical techniques for nurturing holistic health and well-being.
Module 4: Infection Control, Hygiene & Comfort of Older Person
Course Synposis:
This course is designed to equip caregivers with essential skills for providing high-quality and compassionate care to older individuals. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of hygiene, infection control, pain assessment, vital sign measurement, medication administration, and the promotion of a meaningful and enriched life for the elderly.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the important of hygiene and infection control
- Perform the steps of hand hygiene
- Evaluate and assess the pain levels of older individuals using a ‘Pain Chart.’
- Perform measurement of vital signs
- Understand the 5 Rights of administering medication
- Enhance the quality of life for older persons by facilitating and engaging older person with meaningful activities.

2 x Half day : 9.30am to 3.00pm
Total 9.5 hours (for all 4 modules)
Our trainers possess the relevant qualifications and experience to develop and deliver the training courses in their domain areas. Most of them have attained Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) certification or is certified with WSQ Diploma in Adult and Continuing Education that qualifies them to design and develop a learner-centric and industry-specific training programme and competency-based assessment.
Mr Vincent Teng
Trainer, St Luke’s ElderCare
Vincent has more than five years of experience as Centre Manager at St Luke’s EldeCare Senior Care Centre. Currently, as the Trainer with SLEC, Vincent conducts both eldercare and caregiver training. He has completed the Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) training in 2016.
Mr Atienza Sedfrey Del Moro (Tom)
Senior Physiotherapist and Senior Trainer, St Luke’s ElderCare
Tom Sedfrey graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy (Philippines) in 2005. He has more than 10 years of working experiences as a practicing physiotherapist in ILTC sector in Singapore. His areas of interest include neurorehabilitation (Stroke & PD) and geriatric rehabilitation.

Prevailing course fees subsidy after Caregivers Training Grant (CTG) is at $10* for eligible trainee who meets the eligibility criteria for CTG:
Eligible Singaporean caregivers may use Caregivers Training Grant (CTG) and their SkillsFuture Credits (SFC) to pay for the balance CTG course fees.
CARE RECIPIENT must fulfill both the following criteria:
- Singapore Citizen (SC) or Permanent Resident (PR); and
- 65 years old and above, or be certified to have a disability, or is currently receiving services from a Social Service Agency (SSA)
Care recipient to submit ONE of the following if he / she has a disability but is not certified by a Singapore Registered Doctor :
- Doctor’s report/memo by a Singapore Registered Doctor
- Functional Assessment Report
- IDAPE¹ / Eldershield / Home Caregiving Grant approval letter
- MSF’s Client Assessment Form
¹ IDAPE is Interim Disability Assistance Programme for the Elderly.

Caregiver must fulfill all the following criteria:
- Main caregiver of the care recipient;
- An immediate family member or a Migrant Domestic Worker looking after the care recipient
- Attends and completes any of the CTG-approved training course
- Attain 100% attendance at an approved course under CTG
